ISO9001 GAP Analysis Question 51
Preservation of Outputs During Production

To determine if the organization has an adequate process for preserving outputs during production and service provision, begin by examining the procedures and controls established for identification, handling, contamination control, packaging, storage, and transportation. Preservation processes should be clearly documented, and these documents should outline each preservation requirement and how it is integrated within the production workflow. Look for evidence that the organization has considered and implemented safeguards to prevent product damage, contamination, or deterioration throughout each stage, from initial handling to final delivery.

Review how identification of products is managed. The organization should have a system to clearly mark items to maintain their identity and prevent mixing or confusion with other products. This may include labeling, barcoding, or other tagging methods, depending on the type and requirements of the product. Verify that these identification practices are consistent and that personnel know how to use them. Documentation should include information on how products are labeled or tracked as they move through production, storage, and transportation stages.

For handling and contamination control, assess the organization's methods for minimizing risks. Procedures should detail how items are handled to avoid physical damage, and contamination risks should be addressed if products are sensitive to environmental factors like dust, moisture, or temperature. Check that handling guidelines are followed consistently and that appropriate equipment and protective measures are in place. Additionally, confirm that personnel are trained in handling techniques specific to the product's needs to ensure safety and compliance.

Examine the packaging, storage, and transportation processes to ensure they align with customer requirements and product specifications. Packaging should provide adequate protection to maintain product quality during storage and transit. Storage facilities should be organized, with appropriate environmental controls where necessary, to prevent deterioration. For transportation, confirm that measures are in place to prevent damage during loading, unloading, and transit, such as using suitable packing materials and secure methods of transport. Documentation on storage and transportation practices, along with monitoring records, will support the organization’s compliance and ensure product quality is preserved from production through to delivery.
